From strength to strength in tough times.
28 October 2008
As we are fast approaching the end of a very turbulent year it is always amazing how quickly it seemed to pass once we reach November... Especially if we consider how this year was filled with “little” challenges like Load Shedding, Hiking Interest rates, Steel prices and top them off with a Global Financial Crisis and resultant devaluation of the
It is therefore especially unique that
This bears testimony that the right combination of price, product and service will ensure success, even in the toughest of times.
This phenomenal growth was made possible by extensive development of the manufacturing process and the right people in the right places.
After a total of 8 years of development work and Multi Million Rand investments, Palian has not only managed to reduce prices by 15% to 20%, but also managed to increase strength and durability of its products, whilst redesigning to ensure a much more modern look and feel…something that the industry has been lacking over the past decades.
The market demands the very best in products in all regards – strength, appearance, finish, application, lead time, service and off course, price – a demand Palian and

Palian Cape has just completed a new 9500 Pallet position warehouse using their patented Racklock™ Racking system. The installation is the biggest of its kind to date, using this unique product.
Adidas, utilizing Uti’s distribution expertise, outgrew their existing facility in addition to readying themselves for the 2010 Soccer World Cup event. Timing, quality and price were crucial, especially in the current economic climate, which suited the Racklock™ system, manufactured by Palian… perfectly.
All contractors worked together very successfully, to ensure the 13 meters high Racking System was installed ahead of schedule, to very tight tolerances. Tolerances that were not only demanded by the Very Narrow Aisle design, but that Palian insists on. Picking from the systems is done via a “Man up Turret Truck” operating in aisles of only 1600mm, thus reducing the footprint of the entire operation drastically.
Racklock™ racking is the latest in a range of innovative products from PALIAN (PTY) LTD that eliminates the need to have welded connectors onto Horizontal support beams, whilst actually increasing the strength of the system. Deflection is greatly reduced under load and tolerances guaranteed due to the automated process of manufacture. All factors that is crucial for most installations, but especially on this specialized application.
Racklock™ standard products and applications are available Ex-stock at as much as 15% cheaper than similar products and are distributed Nationwide.

The need for superior products, at internationally market related prices, backed by substantial local infrastructure, seems to be growing even more, as end users are realising the obvious advantages of using local products.
More demands are being placed on every aspect of Materials Handling; products need to be stronger and longer lasting, lead times need to be quicker and service or spares availeable immediately, as distribution operations have to continue meeting the consumers demands.
In order to further assist in meeting the growing industry demands, Palian has opened their own projects division, Palian Projects, this highly experienced division has the capability to assist and design the most practical, functional and cost effective layouts of Racking, Shelving or Mezzanine Floors. These standard products are integrated with other material handling equipment, ensuring a complete, cost effective solution to materials handling.
Using the standard stocked components in the overall system ensures unmatched lead times and service, in an industry with new demands that

As
When we compare the hundreds of tons being stored and moved each day in most major warehouses, to the amount of people working beneath, it suddenly becomes a harsh reality that several lives are at stake daily.
Most newly produced Pallet Racking Systems have lifetime expectancy, but this is only valid in the ideal situation where day to day damage does not occur. The fact remains that the slightest dent to any of the major components, actually renders, that particular section, unable to carry any load and will be in danger of collapse. Racking systems are designed to carry uniformly distributed loads and unfortunately does not withstand a side impact from handling equipment.
It is due to this fact that PALIAN (PTY) LTD not only offers a variety of inspection, maintenance and certification options, but furthermore offers increased safety margins on all their products.
Palian’s standard product guarantee of one year can now be extended to 5, 10 or 15 years, subject to a maintenance contract. This maintenance contract will ensure all installations are inspected monthly for wear and tear, with a report submitted on the overall condition of the structure. All recommended crucial repairs have to be made, in order for the guarantee to remain in place, essential spares will be stored on site to ensure fixed costs per pallet and a safe working environment.
In addition, Palian’s patented Racklock™ pallet racking system has proven reduced levels of deflections on beams ensuring higher safety factors.
Beams are subjected to massive loads that increase exponentially if a pallet is slightly “dropped’ onto them or even pushed on to them, by the operator not releasing hydraulic forces of the handling equipment. These added safety factors often mean the difference between a collapse or storage of the pallet and its support structure. It is therefore crucial for warehouse staff to ensure their purchased products have similar or adequate safety factors as the guaranteed load quoted and purchased, will most definitely be exceeded in most cases.
In addition to the forces imposed on beams, floor space is becoming more and more expensive, therefore increasing the overall height of storage structures.
Whilst each beam level supports the particular load on that level, the overall load is supported by the End Frames or Uprights. Once again, PALIAN (PTY) LTD offers a variety of End frames ranging from Light duty, Standard duty, Medium duty to Heavy and Extra Heavy Duty End Frames. These frames are unique in that they are roll formed with either 9 or 11 bends or folds in them, ensuring higher strength and safety factors. Capacities range from 6 tons, 8 tons, 12 tons to 16 and 20 ton End Frames.

Since the launch of Palian Cape in the new facility in Westlake Business this year, Palian (Pty) Ltd has further used this platform to introduce a number of advanced new products;
The first; Trademarked as Racklock™, is a new patented pallet racking system. The system is absolutely unique in the market and features a Seamless beam with integrated connector. Traditionally beams sections were manufactured in two “c” sections welded together opposed to the new seamless section, which is roll formed from flat to round section, induction welded to join, and then formed to a rectangular section of either 90 or 125 mm high. The sections are manufactured in three different thicknesses, in relation to the required capacity. Seamless sections offers as much as 30% less deflection under maximum loads when compared to boxed beams and further offers a much smoother finished surface, that will not collect dirt or cause paint to crack, in the traditional joints of a boxed beam.
Furthermore the section allows for the connector to be fully integrated to the section, with no welding present. This further improves manufacturing efficiency, whilst strengthening the overall system, by locking up against the upright and having no welding present. Other improvements include a new hexagonal base plate that improves load spreading to the floor and an additional “v” shape that is roll formed into the front face of the Uprights, for additional strength and esthetics.
The second is an advanced Boltless Shelving System, Polyclip. This product is set to replace the traditional Nut & Bolt Angle Shelving, which has proved to be a reliable, and robust system, but very labour intensive in installing and shelf adjustment, due to the vast amounts of Nuts & Bolts used in the system.
Polyclip features stronger vertical angles uprights that are joined by two levels of horizontal supports that simply clip in. The shelves use a uniquely designed Shelfclip that not only supports the shelves on each corner, but uses the connection to transfer shelf loads to the upright much more efficiently. Levels can be adjusted by simply relocating the clip, with absolutely no Nuts & Bolts in the system. Load capacities vary from 160Kg to 300 kg per shelf level.
Both of the new products are available Ex-stock in a variety of sizes from
